RICHARDS SPUR UNIDENTIFIED PARAREPTILE? Below: pictures of a maxillary fragment, a premaxilla and two articulated dentaries of a tetrapod that could be considered a probable parareptile on the basis of the presence of a large anterolateral maxillary foramen. This large maxillary foramen is the lateral opening of a naso-maxillary canal that has also a medial opening. Delorhynchus, Colobomycter and reptile X of Bolt (all from Richards Spur Locality) have this foramen, but this specimen differs from Delorhynchus because the maxilla is not laterally sculptured, and it differs from Colobomycter for the kind of articulation with premaxilla, and from both these two taxa, of the same locality, because the teeth are not striated. The above specimen differs from Reptile X Bolt for the presence of bulbous teeth and for the dimensions. The Premaxilla and the dentaries have the same dentition of the maxilla. 1) Unidentified parareptile: maxilla |
