RICHARDS SPUR UNIDENTIFIED

PARAREPTILE

 Above: picture in lateral view of maxillary fragment of  a tetrapod that could be considered a probable parareptile  on the basis of the presence of a large anterolateral maxillary foramen. This large maxillary foramen is the lateral opening of a naso-maxillary canal that has also a medial opening.  Delorhynchus, Colobomycter and reptile X of Bolt (all from Richards Spur Locality) have this foramen, but this specimen  differs from Delorhynchus because the maxilla is not laterally sculptured, and it differs from Colobomycter for the kind of articulation with premaxilla, and from both these two taxa, of the same locality, because the teeth are not striated. The above specimen differs from Reptile X Bolt for the presence of bulbous teeth and for the dimensions. From Richards Spur (Dolese Quarry), Comanche Co. - Oklahoma.  Lower Permian

Abbreviations: la gr, lacrimal groove;  la ss, sutural surface for lacrimal;   lon, lateral opening of the nasomaxillary canal;   mon, medial opening of the nasomaxillary canal;
