S.P. MODESTO BASAL CAPTORHINID REPTILE FROM RICHARDS SPUR

Eureptilia-Captorhinidae

References

In 1996, S.P. Modesto described an almost complete right maxilla and a partial right dentary as belonging to a basal, incertae sedis, probably carnivorous, captorhinid. The teeth differ from the ones of Captorhinus Aguti in that they moderately recurved with anterior and posterior cutting edges that originate proximally as ridges on the lingual surface of the tooth and are accentuated by a shallow excavation on the lingual surface of the same. The presence of resorption pockets suggests that there was active replacement of teeth. If compared with Captorhinus Aguti, the teeth are relatively longer (the basal diameter of each tooth is approximately one-half the total length of the tooth, in Captorhinus Aguti the basal diameter is never less than two-third of the total length of the tooth).
