DIPLOCAULUS

Lepospondyli-Nectridea-Diplocaulidae

References

Diplocaulus is a nectridean lepospondyl, the skull is dorsoventrally flattened with tabulars and squamosals expanded in posterolaterally directed horns. The trunk vertebrae have laterally compressed neural spines that interdigitate by accessory articulating surfaces, the posterior zygapophyses extend well posterior of neural spine giving at the vertebrae the characteristic inverted "Y" shape in dorsal aspect, the top of neural spine, contrary to Diploceraspis, is unornamented except for a deep crescent shaped pit positioned posteriorly. The area of articulation for the capitulum of the rib lies just below the transverse process.
