SYNAPSIDA

Synapsida is a group of amniotes characterized by the presence of a lower  temporal fenestration and narrow neural arches, these two features are present also in other amniotes, but not joined together. There is one exception, the ophiacodontid Varanosaurus that has swollen neural arches, but for that case we have to consider other characteristics that are typical of ophiacodontids and sphenacodontids, among them, the retaining of the plesiomorphic two coronoids and two pedal centralia.
